How We Calculate Exchange Rates
A transparent, in-depth look at our mid-market pricing models, data aggregation architecture, multi-source validation, and rounding precision.
1. What is the Mid-Market Rate?
In global wholesale financial markets, major banks and institutional traders buy currencies at the Bid price and sell currencies at the Ask price. The Mid-Market Rate (also known as the interbank rate or spot rate) represents the exact mathematical midpoint between wholesale supply and demand:
Because it contains zero retail markup, hidden transfer commissions, or currency dealer spreads, the mid-market rate is universally recognized as the fairest and most accurate benchmark rate for currency conversion.
2. Multi-Contributor Data Aggregation Pipeline
LiveExchange ingests continuous price feeds from a diversified network of Tier-1 interbank liquidity providers, central bank reporting desks, and commercial market data vendors. Our automated data pipeline follows three quality gates:
Continuous parsing of quotes across 150+ world fiat currencies from authoritative public and institutional feeds.
Statistical algorithms reject anomalous quotes, flash crashes, or illiquid spreads exceeding three standard deviations.
Calculates robust consensus rates updated on a continuous 30-minute revalidation schedule.
3. Retail Bank Markup vs. LiveExchange Mid-Market
Many consumers are surprised to find that the rate offered by their local bank or airport kiosk differs significantly from the rate displayed on LiveExchange. This disparity is known as the Foreign Exchange Spread Markup.
| Provider Category | Typical FX Spread Markup | Additional Fixed Fees | Transparency Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| LiveExchange Reference | 0.00% (Mid-Market) | $0.00 | 100% Unbiased Benchmark |
| Leading Fintech Apps | 0.30% – 0.80% | $0.50 – $3.00 | High (Explicit Fees) |
| Traditional Retail Banks | 2.50% – 4.50% | $15.00 – $45.00 | Low (Hidden in Rate) |
| Airport Currency Kiosks | 7.00% – 14.00% | $5.00 – $10.00 | Very Low (High Margin) |
4. Rounding & Precision Standards
Foreign exchange precision depends on standard market conventions:
- Standard Major & Minor Pairs: Quoted to 4 decimal places (e.g., 1 EUR = 1.0825 USD) to capture standard 1/10,000th pip increments.
- High-Value Denominations: Japanese Yen (JPY), Korean Won (KRW), and Hungarian Forint (HUF) are quoted to 2 decimal places.
- Emerging Market Currencies: Quoted to 4 decimal places to ensure micro-variation accuracy for remittances.
